The Conductor
By
Jake Bible
The conductor held the baton out.
Then with a great flourish, his hand went up then down, then to the right.
The orchestra made no notes. No vibrating strings. No bleat of horns or thump thump of drums.
Yet the conductor did what he had always done: conduct.
Sweat formed on his brow as the silent minutes ticked by yet the conductor never stopped until the piece was concluded.
Then he lowered the baton and placed it back inside his parka, thanking the empty chairs with a nod.
The conductor left the crumbling auditorium and returned to the wasteland outside.
