Marcela did not like the look in the creature’s eyes.

Not one bit.

“Good…kitty?”

The creature’s throat rumbled.

A growl?

A purr?

Marcela shrugged.

“I’m going to back away slowly,” she said, doing just that. “You’re going to stay.”

The creature did not stay.

Marcela froze.

The creature froze. It flared its nostrils as a long, black tongue slid from between serrated teeth, dripping saliva.

“Nah, nothing good to smell here,” Marcela said.

Except there was.

In her pocket.

Cookies.

The creature pounced and Marcela’s last thought was that they really were not good enough cookies to die over.
