The boat rocked gently as the wind came down off the mountain and caressed the lake.

Nomi rested in the bottom of the boat with her legs tucked under her and her head pressed against the side.

“Do you hear me, monster?” she whispered.

“I hear you,” the deep voice replied, burbling up from the lake bottom.

“Do you miss me, monster?”

“Every day.”

“Really and truly?”

“Yes.”

Nomi sighed and wiped a single tear from her cheek. That was all she allowed herself.

The boat rocked gently as the wind came down off the mountain and caressed the lake.
