His Heart Sleeps

The writer sits at his desk.
He stares at the keys. Nothing comes.
There are no stories left to mine. The words refuse to obey.
The glass tinkles with ice, yet he hasn’t gotten up from his chair for hours, days, weeks, months, years, eons.
He sips from the brown liquid that isn’t there; he sighs with lungs that never fill.
His eyes burn; his heart sleeps.
In the writer’s brain, he can feel them moving. The worms that used to speak to him. The creepy crawlies that said they would never leave.
The writer sits at his desk.
Dead.
