An Odd Number
By
Jake Bible
Seventeen rabbits.
An odd number.
“There were forty-three yesterday,” my assistant, Janey, says.
“Video?” I ask.
She frowns. “I checked the videos and…” She looks over her tablet at the seventeen rabbits. “I think they are being absorbed.”
I laugh.
She doesn’t.
“Seriously?” I study the rabbits. “Explain.”
“You’ll see,” she says and shows me her tablet.
I do see.
The gray and white one seems to pounce on others and then they are simply…gone.
“Aren’t rabbits supposed to multiply?” I ask, knowing the answer.
Janey shrugs. “Eleven.”
“What?”
She points.
Eleven rabbits now.
A very odd number, indeed.
